SKETCHBOOK #11

Your next sketchbook assignment is to draw something metallic or reflective like the still life we're working on in class, and add value to make it look like there are believable reflections. This should take a total of about 30 minutes. You get to choose the object(s), the materials you use, and the size of the sketch.

Due next Wednesday, Nov. 17

SKETCHBOOK #10

This week you are free to draw anything you want! You can do one sketch or many sketches - the only parameters are:

1) you should spend a total of 30 minutes working on this
2) the sketch/sketches should somehow relate to you and who you are

SKETCHBOOK #9

What famous building have you chosen to draw for the At-Home Perspective drawing? What country/culture/era is the building from? In your sketchbook, draw five things from that culture. You could draw the clothing, the sculpture, the food, animals, religious artifacts, other buildings -- anything you can find from that time and place. Your sketches should take about 5 minutes each, and should be labeled as to what they are and where you found them (i.e. website, book, etc).

FALL BREAK

I changed my mind - there is NO sketchbook homework during the break, which means nothing is due the week we get back. Enjoy the time off!

SKETCHBOOK #8

Chapters 7, 8, and 9 in your textbook cover the topics we've been working on recently: value scales, toning the page, and making round objects look like they have depth. Skim over those chapters and look at the examples - then set up your own still life with a strong light source and draw that still life in your sketchbook.

You have total creative freedom as long as there is a definite range of values with a light source and cast shadow. You can tone the page and erase into that ground, or start with a white page and add shading where it should be dark - your choice. Use your graphite pencil set, and refer to the chart you made in class to see which hardnesses of pencils you need to use.

SKETCHBOOK #7

It's time for VALUE!

For this next sketchbook assignment, use a graphite pencil of your choice and copy both the sphere and value scale in the image below as accurately as possible. I suggest that you trace something round to get a perfect circle, then add shading to make the circle into a sphere. Your sphere drawing should include the cast shadow and horizon line, just like you see in the image. This will be due next Wednesday.

SKETCHBOOK #6

POSITIVE & NEGATIVE DESIGN:

Using either your initials or your full name, create an interesting black and white design that uses figure/ground reversal (ambiguous figure/ground). The end product should be in sharpie with no visible pencil marks, and should be about 6" at the widest side. Think of this as a personal logo, and be creative. You may include decorative shapes or patterns if you choose to, as long as the letters are visible.
Look at the following images for inspiration.
